Reading Reflection for Third Quarter 2024

2024 Reading Goals, 36 Books, Green Bar at 94%, (34 books)

We are now 3/4 of the way through the year, and I’m back with an update to my novel-length reading goals. And I have made excellent reading progress! I’ve completed 34 books total this year, with eleven (11) books in the last 3 months. I’m ahead of my reading goal by seven (7) books!

I didn’t realize I was within two books of my yearly reading goal. That’s a great feeling! (Those two are also currently in-progress.)

What did I read?

I read eleven (11) books in the third quarter of 2024 for a total of 3100 pages. I managed to read the same number of books but with fewer pages as the second quarter. The contents of those pages is summed in the charts below, as created with The StoryGraph.

My moods focused on non-fiction and informative this quarter, but always rooted in the emotional and adventurous. Four (4) of the books I read matched those moods. We topped out with reflective (3), dark and challenging (2), inspiring and funny (1). It’s interesting to see the moods change quarter to quarter.

My most read genre this quarter were Fantasy and LGBTQIA+ at five (5) books. I also read books classifed as Feminism, Science Fiction, Science, Romance, and Horror. I would say that about sums up most of my favorite genres!

This quarter, I again did not read any author more than once.

Best Books of the Quarter

I gave five (5) books top rating this quarter.

I received an ARC copy of the audiobook (via Spotify) of Saints of Storm and Sorrow by Gabriella Buba.

It’s wonderful when writing research and a love of a particular author overlap. I especially enjoyed The Last Days of the Dinosaurs: An Asteroid, Extinction, and the Beginning of Our World by Riley Black. (I honestly can’t wait until her next book, which can be preordered now!)

I am not a fan of writing craft books. However, Gail Carson Levine‘s Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly aimed at middle schoolers, is a great craft book for any age and any stage.

Finishing up my non-fiction reads that rated highly is Recollections of My Nonexistence: A Memoir by Rebecca Solnit.

Last, but certainly not least, Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell is his debut novel which came out this year and I’m certain will be up for a ton of awards next year, even if no one knows what genre it is.

I’m excited to see how far past my goal I can reach this year and what to stretch to next year! My year-end wrap-up will be on the first Friday in January 2025.
